Workshop with Carol Gouthro (Sept. 18, 2020)

Karen Russo is a figurative ceramic sculptor, living and working in the hills of western Oregon. She uses clay, a medium that comes from the earth, and her art equally to express a deep connection with nature. Her subjects are women from different eras and origins, all exploring feelings of strength, sensuality, and contemplation.

Image Transfer on Clay (All Levels)
2022 (Dates TBD)
$150*

Join us for “Image Transfer on Clay”, a one-day, technique-based workshop with Carol Gouthro. Due to COVID-19, the workshop originally scheduled to be held on Sept. 18, 2020 at Karen Russo Studio in Elmira, OR has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled in 2022, with a specific date to be determined. Registration information is located at the bottom of the page.

*Carol will also teaching a five-day, ceramic sculpture workshop in 2022 at Karen Russo Studio. If you register for both the ‘Ceramic Sculpture’ and ‘Image Transfer on Clay’ workshops, you will receive a $25 discount for the ‘Image Transfer on Clay’ workshop fee.

This one-day workshop will cover a variety of techniques to incorporate photographs and copy machine images, text, and drawings onto your ceramic pottery or sculpture. Anything that can be photocopied can be easily transferred to your ceramic work using either toner transfer techniques or iron transfer decals. The resulting images are sepia toned.

We will also experiment with a variety of ways to incorporate color and pattern into your transfer images. Students will bring their own wet clay, leather hard green ware for toner transfers, and fully glazed ware for decals.

Artist Statement

“At the core of my ceramic work is the vessel which has many associations including ripening, sexuality, and transformation. I am drawn to ornament, embellishment, color, and pattern. I have a strong interest in detail and minutiae. When I start working on a new piece I am often responding to something that I have seen that captivates me. It might be something very small, something in my garden, a seed, or flower petal, or it might be something I have seen in my tool drawer like the elegant line of a plastic French curve, or I might be stimulated by one of the many clay studies, bits and pieces of inspirational detritus that accumulate on my studio shelves over time. Sometimes it is language that motivates me. Words like ‘Articulatus’ and ‘Laciniatus’ invite interpretation. As I start working, I am only interested in abstracting and translating these stimuli and feelings into a tangible, evocative object.”
